Two photographs of a Redwing in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA,
one day only, Saturday, February 5, 2005,
a first for Pennsylvania, the third for the US.
The bird was found, among a flock of American Robins,
at Peace Valley by Jessica Huff.
Hundreds of birders who looked for it the next day did not find it.

The Redwing is a common thrush across Eurasia, from Iceland to eastern Siberia.
There have been a number of records in eastern Canada in: Newfoundland,
Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Quebec.
In the US, there's a record from Jamaica Bay, in New York City, in 1959.
Then, this winter, one was found in the northwestern US in Olympia,
Washington State, on December 20, 2004, and still present as of February 1, 2005.
Also, this year, 2005, in eastern Canada, one was found in Newfoundland,
near St. John's on January 5. What's likely the same bird was in
Topsail, Newfoundland, on February 2, 2005.

During FONT birding & nature tours in Iceland, in October,
the Redwing is the most common passerine. Large flocks stage there
that time of year for their flights to the British Isles.

After an oil-spill off the coast of New Jersey,
some oceanic birds were taken to the Tri-State Bird Rescue Center in Delaware.
About a week later, some were released back to sea along the New Jersey Coast, including the Red-necked Grebe
(above),
and the Razorbill
( immediately below) and Common Murre (below that).

Two photographs of a Trumpeter Swan
in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
(taken by Leroy Laskowski on February 19, 2004)

The above swan came from a place in Ontario, Canada, called Wilcox Lake,
just south of Georgian Bay.
There's a Trumpeter Swan restocking program in that area of Ontario.
Swans from there don't usually fly as far south as Pennsylvania,
but one has been found south to Tennessee.
A few have flown in recent winters to the Rochester, NY area on the south side of Lake Ontario. Most of the Wilcox Lake swans have stayed in Ontario.
This Trumpeter Swan was hatched in 2001. It is a male, as indicated by the silver band on the right leg. (Females are banded on the left leg.) It's tag number is "767". The bird was tagged and released on May 30, 2003.

What is a "Nelson's Gull ?"

It's a Glaucous-Herring Gull hybrid,
and this bird apparently is one.
It was photographed along the New Jersey coast,
near the Manasquan Inlet, in February 2004, by Alex Tongas.

This Short-eared Owl photographed at Brigantine Refuge in New Jersey, on January 1, 2004, the first day of the year,
was a "first" as well, a lifer, for the photographer, Kim Steininger.
