List of South American Butterflies, Part #5:

Family HESPERIIDAE: SKIPPERS

HESPERIIDAE is a very large family of 3,500 known species throughout the world.
In Ecuador, there are over 650 species, of which at least 100 are either endemic to the country or nearly so.

Skippers, in general, are stout-bodied short-winged butterflies that resemble day-flying moths. The adult butterfly's flight resembles a 'skipping' motion when going from flower to flower.

Skippers are different from other butterflies and from moths, in that their antennae end in a sort of hook, whereas those other butterflies end with a knob. Those of moths are feathery.
Due to the structure of their wings, skippers are capable of powerful flight. Additionally, their wings are versatile. they can be extended or held toward the back when sitting, or even folded back,

There are species and even genera in HESPERIIDAE that look very similar, which can make identification difficult. especially among the "Grass Skippers", those in the subfamily HESPERIINAE.
There are 4 major subfamilies in Ecuador, and in the following list: EUDAMINAE, PYRGINAE, HETEROPTERLINAE, and HESPERIINAE.
Host plants vary in accordance with the various subfamilies.

 Subfamily EUDAMINAE

Skippers in the EUDAMINAE subfamily are characterized by their sitting with wings extended,
          usually elongated forewings.
Some species have "long tails" which are actually caudas on the hindwings.
These include those in the genera: Urbanus, Typhedanus, Codatractus.
Those in Urbanus tend to be particularly common.
Those in the genus Autochon are common in open areas.
Skippers in the genus Astraptes, the "Flashers", have elongated forewings and brilliant blue colors.
          They tend to be common.
Those in the genus Phocides have long wings, and blue, black and white coloration.
They have long mimetic chains within and beyond the genus.

The host plants for EUDAMINAE skippers are varied, but generally are in Fabaceae, Mimosaceae (including Inga spp.),
Verbenaceae, and also grasses, including those in Poaceae (such as Canna indica, and Cynodon spp.).

    Subfamily HETEROPTERINAE

The butterflies in HETEROPTERINAE are known as the "Skipperlings".

Even though HETEROPTERINAE is a small subfamily, in one of its genera, Dalla, there are 38 species in Ecuador, and about 40 per cent of them are endemic or nearly so to that country.
There is also, in the subfamily, a genus that is endemic to Ecuador, Freemaniana, created in 2001. In that genus, there is only one species.

"Skipperlings" are small, with an elongated abdomen, usually curved downwards when sitting.
They are often seen by streams and on wet soil ingesting mineral salts.
Species in this group occur in a variety of habitats.

Host plants are usually grasses. For example, in Poaceae.
