GREAT SPERM WHALES occur during the winter & spring
off the coast of Dominica.
The angled spout
(above) is characteristic of the mammal
when it is at the surface of the sea.
During FONT Dominica Tours both the GREAT SPERM WHALE
and the DWARF SPERM WHALE have been seen.

Here, a pod of FRASER'S DOLPHINS off the coast of Dominica.
The species was not scientifically described until 1956,
and was not seen alive until the early 1970s.
Populations occur in the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans.
During FONT Dominica Tours, pods were seen during our offshore boat-trips
in March 2000 & March 2002.
In 2000, there were over 200 of these dolphins,
and some are in the photograph above.

JAGUARS have been seen, all  be it rarely, in recent years, in Arizona in the US,
from a population in the northwest Mexican state of Sonora,
at the northern end of the species' range.

The painting above depicts such an animal in that area.
It is the work of Bonnie Swarbrick,
of the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge
in southern Arizona.
We crossed paths with both her & the painting
during a FONT Tour in August 2010.

JAGUARS, themselves, have been seen during 2 FONT Tours in Mexico,
in the state of Campeche, just west of the Yucatan,
in November 2008 & March 2009.

(about 600 species of mammals in Brazil,
over 70 during FONT Tours)

Brazil has the largest mammal diversity in the world,
with more than 600 described species,
and certainly others yet to be.
66 of the species are endangered.
40% of the threatened species are primates.

A rare animal, this MANED THREE-TOED SLOTH
was photographed during the FONT Tour
in Southeast Brazil in March 2008.

CHILE

This tiny deer, the SOUTHERN PUDU,
has been seen and photographed
during FONT Tours in Chile.

Mammals of Chile
A List with some PHOTOS

In the Chile mammal list, reached from the above link,
there are creatures with names such as akodonts and octodonts
degus
, tuco-tucos, cavies, chinchillas, and viscachas.
And others with such alien words as names as:
coypu
, colocolo, kodkod, huemul, vicuna, and pudu.

The Pudu is in the photograph above.

It's true that the akodonts and the like are just mice, or small rats and such,
but one can't help but be intrigued by the names,
and those, too, of other Chilean animals
such as pericotes, laucas, and the colilargo.

Imagine a Graceful Laucha or a Lofty Pericote.
The second of these, by the way, lives in the Andes up to 19,700 feet above sea level,
making it the highest living mammal in the Western Hemisphere.

And one can only envision what a Long-nosed Caenolestid looks like.

And then there's a small rat that looks a bit like a rabbit,
called the "Bunny Rat",
and still (of course) has yet another rather long and odd name:
the Hairy-soled Coney Rat.

All of the mammals & more are in the list reached from the link above.
