Birds & Other Wildlife
in area of the
"Garden of the Amazon"
or the "Jardin da Amazonia"

Found during Focus On Nature Tours
in that area in the central Mato Grosso
of Brazil

A List compiled by Armas Hill

Cumulatively there have been 50 FONT birding & nature tours in Brazil, and 1,040 species of birds have cumulatively been seen.
Some of our "Amazonian" birding in Brazil has been in central Mato Grosso state,
in the area of "Jardim da Amazona" ("the Garden of the Amazon").

Also, in northern Mato Grosso state in the areas of the Rio Cristalino & Alta Floresta.

Recent taxonomic changes have been incorporated into the following list. A number of these are from "The Birds of Ecuador - Status, Distribution, and Taxonomy" by Robert S. Ridgely and Paul J. Greenfield. Others are from the 3rd edition of "The Howard & Moore Complete Checklist of the Birds of the World". In general, the taxonomic order is as it is in that publication and in "Birds of the World - Recommended English Names" by Frank Gill and Minturn Wright. Nomenclature is usually as it is in the Gill & Wright book.

A new & fine book, published in 2009, is "A Field Guide to the Birds of Brazil" by Ber van Perlo. The book is available from FONT at a reduced price, and especially so for those joining FONT tours in Brazil.
